Sibford School has been chosen to host the Oxfordshire regional tournament of the Northampton Saints 2014 Elite Insurance Sevens Series.
The news follows reports that the series, which runs across the East of England, is already attracting record entries, with two months still to go to kick off.
Ben Mann from Northampton Saints community team said: “The International Rugby Board are saying that Rugby Sevens is enjoying unprecedented growth, and we’re seeing this reflected in the interest shown locally in the Elite Insurance Sevens Series.”
The series gives Under-13 schools teams the opportunity to receive coaching for players and coach development sessions for teachers, before competing in one of five regional tournaments, which will take place in Cambridge, Bedfordshire, Suffolk, Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire.
The winners and runners-up of each tournament then head to Franklin’s Gardens, home of Northampton Saints, for the Finals Day on 24 April.
The Oxfordshire regional tournament at Sibford School takes place on Tuesday 1 April and will form part of the school’s annual Rugby Sevens Festival which this year will take place over seven days and, for the first time ever, will include an under 18 event and a day dedicated to Under 13 and Under 15 girl’s rugby.
Richard Ferley, head of sport at Sibford School said: “Since Rugby Sevens got accepted as an Olympic sport its profile has gone up and up. We are delighted that Sibford has been chosen as a host for the Elite Insurance Sevens Series and are also very excited that our annual sevens festival, now in its 16th year, is going to be bigger and better than ever before.”
